“A good design is a brand’s silent ambassador”. While this is true to its core, what makes a design good or bad? Many would say that it is a subjective matter, but a good design always conveys a clear message and draws a positive response from viewers.
Having said that, following are a few mistakes you should avoid to create a winning design:
It won’t be wrong to say that typography is the heart of any design project. Using type that does not match well with the content of the design is a mistake commonly made by amateur designers. To avoid this you need to need to have a clear idea of the brief. Communicate with the client, understand the message your clients want to convey through the design and then wisely select types that would go hand-in-hand with the tone of the design content. You should also avoid using too many typefaces to make your design more readable.
Attaining Perfect Symmetry
Let’s get this straight – Symmetry is boring. While you may tend to think that symmetry makes a design look clean, it is balance that you need to focus on. Balance is maintaining uniformity throughout the design project and imparting stability to the presentation. Symmetry may work for some designs, but asymmetry will add an appeal to your design and make it more engrossing.
Not Leaving Enough White Space
Design overloaded with content makes it look cluttered and illegible. Such a design fails to drive a clear message and is not well received by viewers. You should allow every element some breathing space and fit copy, leaving
enough white space. White space optimizes your design and bestows a visual hierarchy to viewers. You may use a grid to organize content better, but it is equally important to provide enough room to breathe inside each box.
Learning graphic designing with design and color concepts can help you a lot to understand what to include and what to avoid in your design whether it is a logo or web layout or a poster.
Over Center Aligning
A very common mistake observed amongst fresh designers is center aligning the text. Center alignment makes it difficult for viewers to read and leaves them confused about where the next line starts. You should preferably use right or left alignment to provide legibility to your design.
Another mistake is fitting too much text in one line. This again leads to readability issues. You should keep the length of line short and fit only 45-75 characters in one line including spaces.
Failing to Proofread
This is a death trap for designers. Typos and misspelled words make things ugly no matter how superlative your design is. Design that has errors will leave your client unimpressed who will definitely reject it. Once you have completed your project, read the text out loud. Having a hard print also contributes in finding errors easily.
