We are back with the next 6 principles of animation proposed by the legendary animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. We hope you reaped a lot of knowledge from our previous blog about the first 6 principles of animation. Let us continue to gain more knowledge that will help you in becoming a better animator.

We have Alan Becker’s tutorial videos to get a deeper understanding of these principles.

  1. Arc

According to the arc principle, any motion that you render to the character must have a slight circular motion. For example when someone hits a ball with a bat, the ball never travels straight. Due to gravity, the ball travels in a trajectory. Also the movement of arms while hitting the ball will have a circular motion. Watch Alan’s tutorial video and you will know how a simple arc will help you add more character to your animation.

  1. Secondary Action

Secondary action is the one which takes place as a result of a primary or main action. Including a secondary action will make the animated character more realistic. These are gestures that add to the facets of the characters and makes the main action look more natural.

Through Alan’s video, you’ll know how secondary action will give a personality to your characters.

  1. Timing

Timing plays a crucial role in animation. Without proper timing, it would seem as if your animation is violating the laws of physics which would make it look very unrealistic. With the principle of timing you can also create ananimation course after 12th illusion of fast and slow motion. You can achieve this by either lowering the number of frames in between the beginning and end or by adding more frames in between the two extreme poses. Watch Alan illustrate how adding a number of frames in between can bring about different meaningful actions.

  1. Exaggeration

The one thing that is happily excused in animation is going above the board. But, you still have to make it believable. Exaggeration principle can be used to make a strong point. We all are huge fans of the animated series ‘Tom & Jerry’. The principle of exaggeration rules this series. Exaggerate the actions of your characters to make a greater impact on your audience. Here’s Alan’s video explaining this principle.

  1. Solid Drawings

Animation requires the knowledge of 3D drawings. The principle of solid drawings tells you that despite your drawings being 2D, they should create an illusion of a 3D character having certain weight and volume. While creating your drawings make more use of solid shapes. Watch Alan’s tutorial video which help you in constructing characters the easier way.

  1. Appeal

The last principle tells you that all your animated characters should be dynamic. They should be sketched in a way that your audience like them. These characters are not just the protagonists  of your story, but also those other characters that add up volume to your story. They need not necessarily look attractive but should possess a personality. Alan explains through his video how you can create appealing characters that would make you audience instantly like them.

Always remember these 12 principles of animation and we are sure you will be able to create animated characters that would seem more realistic, win your audience’s heart and will become legendary.

Mickey Mouse, Tweety, Goofy, Aladdin, Donald Duck, Sheriff Woody, Tom & Jerry. These and many other animated characters have ruled our hearts & the animation world for ages, and will continue to do so for many more years to come. Despite being animated, they felt real and that is  because their animators had successfully breathed life into them.

With the advanced technology, animation has become much easier as compared to previous years. But, mastery in use of tools is not equal to mastery in art. Animation is truly an art and to excel in it you must know the principles that rule the art. Thanks to two of Disney’s famous ‘9 Old Men’ – Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, we have the 12 basic principles that will help you mould the art of animation and let you breathe life into your animated characters. Let us understand these 12 principles with the help of Alan Becker’s tutorial videos.

These animation principles are essentially to be studied, if you want to be an animator. You can study these priciples, understand them and learn how to  implement them in the long term animation courses like diploma or degree in animation.

Squash and Stretch

You need to expand and compress the character’s body in this principle. Using this principle you can render weight and volume to that character when it moves. As a result, the audience believes that the character is moving due to the impact of gravity on their body. Watch Alan’s tutorial to know how to emphasize an object’s weight, speed, momentum and mass using this squash and stretch principle.

 Anticipation

The principle of anticipation is used to let the audience predict that some immediate action is going to happen. By doing so you make the action seems more real. It is a precursory action used to indicate that a major action is about to take place. Through his tutorial video, Alan successfully explains how without anticipation the action would seem unrealistic and leave the audience confused.

Staging

Staging is a principle that throws light over several prospects of animation like acting, posing, timing, etc. According to this principle, any minute action that a character does should convey a clear message/emotions to the audience. With staging you are also directing your audience where to look. It is totally alright to over-exaggerate to communicate your message to the audience.

Watch Alan explain staging to get a deeper understanding of the principle.

Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose

This principle is about two methods which are to be used to animate the sketched characters. Straight ahead is a method in which you draw every successive pose of the character. In pose to pose method, you draw the beginning and ending pose of the character and then fill in the intermediate poses. While both methods are advantageous, pose to pose is a favorite amongst animators. Watch Alan’s tutorial video to know why.

Follow Through and Overlapping Action

Ever heard of the term in physics called inertia? Do you feel a jerk when you suddenly apply your car brakes? That’s due to inertia. It is the property due to which an object continues to be in its existing state of motion unless an external force is animation coursesapplied to stop it. Follow through and overlapping action follows the same principle of inertia. It follows that when a body stops, other parts of the body continue to be in action a little bit longer. It would be much easier to understand this principle with Alan’s tutorial video.

Slow In and Slow Out

Any action in real life starts slowly, picks up momentum and then ends slowly. Using this theory, slow in and slow out principle makes a character’s actions look more realistic. To start and end an action slowly you need to draw more frames or poses towards the beginning and end of the action. This principle is also useful to create slow motion. Give a little  more realistic touch to your animation by following this golden principle of motion.

Here’s Alan explaining how to.

These are the 6 of the 12 basic principles laid down by the two legendary forefathers of animation. Watch out for our next blog to read the next 6 principles.
