Sanshilp Films’ Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande, made on a budget of over 50 crores, is apparently the most expensive film to be made in Marathi as well as in English and also promises to be the most spectacular film to be churned out by the Marathi film industry. It is to be shot in 3D visuals. And to make sure that this happens fruitfully, Shailesh Nile, the writer of the film and the rest of the crew, have decided on appointing technicians from Hollywood who have worked in the Hollywood movie ‘300’.

This movie, for a change, is not about a brave and virtuous ruler or a mythological character or a superhero. It is, in fact, the story of the fearless minister of Chattrapati Shivaji, Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande who had selflessly sacrificed his life in order to save Shivaji and help him flee from the Panhala Fort.

The significant battle of PawanKhind is poised to be one of the most interesting parts of the film which will be shot with mind-boggling visual effects. The painful drama of Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande, fighting the Mughals until his last breath to save Shivaji, will surely be a treat to watch in 3D. All the intricate planning and plotting and the charade of Shiva Nhavi, which formed an intrinsic part of the historical battle, have been scripted with utter precision.

Audio and Video Editing Course Though the cast has not yet been finalized, Hindi film actor Ajay Devgan might be roped in for the lead role. The other contenders for the role are Atul Kulkarni, Nana Patekar and the demi god of south, Rajnikanth.

The movie will be shot in two languages, Marathi and English, and dubbed in various other languages. ‘Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande’ will get a release in 2013 all over India as well as abroad. The makers of the film promise to present the rich history of Maharashtra to India and the world with visual effects which are as thrilling as that of Hollywood.

Video-Editing-CourseOwing to the lavishness with which Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande is being shot, we can expect it to create as much waves in the international circuit as was generated by ‘Swaas’ (2004) and ‘Harishchandra’s Factory’ (2009). Both these films were selected for India’s official entry to the Oscars in their respective years and considering the magnanimity and scale of the venture, Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande’ can also follow suit.

It is indeed a big step for Marathi cinema which is gradually making its presence felt in the movie scene in spite of the predominance of Hindi cinema (read: Bollywood) all over India. It thus remains to be seen how much benefit does the Marathi film scene receives from Veer Bajiprabhu Deshpande when it is released next year.

Arjun: The Warrior Prince Stands Out for His Occasional Brilliance in Animation

To put it simply, Arjun: The Warrior Prince is quite an impressive step towards animation in Indian cinema.  It has some of the most gorgeous images that Indian animation 2D-Animationcinema has ever seen. Arjun has been presented as a tall, dark and handsome man with chiseled features and wash board abs. Arjun shooting an arrow through a golden fish in order to win Draupadi’s hand for marriage is a scene that stands out for its spectacular appeal. The climax which shows the formation of the Chakravyuh army is also incredible. Reference from Japanese manga and anime makes the visuals even more rich and engaging.

The title of the film may lead you to believe that it will be a film about the Battle of Kurukshetra, the struggle for power between the good and bad. But this ‘Arjun’ starts with the nine year old Arjun and traces his epic journey from being a prince and a humble student of Dronacharya to a warrior. It is on Arjun, the archer, that the film is based. It tracks how time and again he had to prove his prowess as an archer. He has been presented as an indomitable warrior, a vindictive husband who swears to avenge his wife’s humiliation and as a devoted brother. The psychological battles of Arjun have been beautifully portrayed in the film.

M.A. in Multimedia Animation But sadly, the other characters except for the evil Shakuni Mama seem to remain underdeveloped. The characters are undoubtedly heroic but have been weakly sketched. The rage of Draupadi and the pain of Karna on being the right man fighting for the wrong people could have been portrayed better. Shakuni Mama has been portrayed as the typical villain we have always known him as. He is short, wheezy and succeeds in extracting our wrath and hatred. And like a true villain laughs uproariously on succeeding in his evil motives.

Arnab Chaudhuri has done an impressive job as a director. He has worked brilliantly on the grand scale throughout the film which, by the way, is not ostentatious but a sheer spectacle to feast our eyes on. Things like the presentation of landscapes, chariot race through the monolithic fort, pageantry galore etc. may be simple eye candies but do not look useless. Even the clichés have been refreshingly presented by the director. An apt example of this would be the scene where you get to see Arjun in various poses surrounded by lonely mountains. What saves this scene from being a cliché is the way it has been shot. A carousel shot is seen capturing him from all the angles. Besides, it is the combination of an awe-inspiring backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the roaring music that works brilliantly for the scene. The songs have also been magnificently shot. The music too is worth humming.

With the story known to everyone, the interest lies in narration, which unfortunately falls flat at times. The first half seems like a history lesson while the second half is speedy. Though animation films are generally meant for children, this film exhibits quite a few instances of violence especially in the battle scenes. It may not work as a perfect kid flick but it is a must watch as a beginner’s guide to Indian animation films.

Ice Age: Continental Drift 2012

2D & 3D AnimationThis is the fourth in this series of prehistoric fantasy delving in much improved visuals but failing on the story telling part. In this part, Scrat, the squirrel with sabre tooth gets a well deserved promotion to plotting catalyst from just a series mascot. With raising of Scrat’s star the momentum of the cinema falls. Scriptwriters Michael Berg and Jason Fuchs failed to deliver anything new and followed earlier patterns and just managed to substitute the kid-friendly dinosaurs such as woolly mammoth Manny in ‘2009 Ice Age: Dawn of Dinosaurs’ with pirates in Continental Drift 2012.

The exploits of Manny and his epic journey could be missing if you have seen Dawn of Dinosaurs, but that would not mater to those viewing Ice Age series for the first time. The funny action sequences coupled with brilliant visuals and fascinating backdrops could make children and young audience laugh throughout the film. This is the third production from the Fox’s in this summer after Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted from Dream Works’ and Brave form Pixar. Ice Age 4 together with the other two could surely collect all the kudos for exceptional 3d animation which by itself is enough to keep the cash registers ticking high.

Manny the mammoth, Diego the tiger, and Sid the sloth forming the core trio group, are joined by other newcomers to engage in numerous subplots and deviate from the main story line from time to time. In the rigmarole that follows the earth falls apart literally when Scrat’s chase of his acorn results in a continental drift and gives rise to Pangea. Here the filmmakers cared little about the geological past.

The trio go adrift on an ice block with Manny detached from Ellie his mate and Peaches their teenaged daughter. On this journey they managed to pick up Sid’s Beverly Hillbillies a problematic stowaway. Meanwhile Peaches (Keke Palmer, also sang ‘We are’ as the end credits), has found company in kid mammoths (Glee cheerleader Heather Morris, rapper Nicki Minaj, and hip hop artist Drake). In the process she manages to get separated from mole hog Louis, her best friend.

UG & PG Animation DegreePeter Dinklage offers the voice of pirate king Captain Gutt. Among his disorganised crew is Diego who finds a lover in white tiger Shira (Jennifer Lopez). There also is Mother Nature trying to prevent Manny and his friend from returning home.

Ray Romano lend voice for Manny, John Leguizamo for goofy sloth Sid, and Denis Leary for Diego the tiger. Scrat’s voice over is done by Chris Wedge, and Queen Latifah voices over for Mammy’s mate Ellie.

Though Ice Age 4 lacks the subtlety and humour of Ice Age 1, the best in the series so far, the visual experience in thrilling. This film would generate small patches of delights instead of a broad masterpiece canvas.
