Size matters! Or does it?

Ask Goliath what he felt on being hit by someone much smaller than him.

These, then are the strange ways of the world.

Something similar seems to be happening with the world of animation. Remember the movie Ice Age? Well, it comes from a relatively little-known studio called Blue Sky.UG & PG Animation Degree

Relatively because it is still some distance from production houses like Disney, DreamWorks Animation, Pixar and Industrial Sound and Lights but it is still in the reckoning due to its pedigree. It is part of the 20th Century Fox production house!

With close to a dozen full-length 2D films like the Ice Age the Rio series, it is still a dwarf when compared to the biggies in the field. Financially their products especially the Ice Age series has had a mixed response some details of which are mentioned below.

Year of release

Budgeted costs

Ice Age (Academy Award for Best Animated Feature) 2002 USD 59 million USD 383 million
Ice Age: The Meltdown 2006 USD 80 million USD 655  million
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 2009 USD 90 million USD 886  million
Ice Age: Continental Drift (best earning in the Animated category ever) 2012 USD 95 million USD 877  million

It all started in the year 1987 when Chris Wedge, Carl Ludwig, Dr. Eugene Troubetzkoy, Alison Brown, David Brown and Michael Ferraro ex employees at Disney started Blue Sky and continued with animation in advertisements for a range of products ranging from Chrysler to Mars chocolates to General Foods.

This continued for a decade when in the year 1997, 20th Century Fox’s VIFIX bought over the company. Ever since they have done animation work for movies like The X-Files, Blade, Armageddon, Titanic and Alien: Resurrection.

Their mantra for success? Stories that anyone anywhere in the world can related with + locales and content being the same order! The Ice Age series are a case in point. Everyone everywhere on the earth knows about it and can relate to it!

MayaIf Market pundits are to be believed, Blue Sky’s products seem to be making more money outside North America, the producer’s traditional market in places like Europe, Russia and Far East.  The first in the Rio series grossed up USD 341 million overseas against much less at home! And this seems the case for practically all of their offerings.

What can we expect in the near future?  2015 shall see two releases. The fifth Ice Age film will likely be released in mid 2015 and the year-end will see another feature named Peanuts.

We end with the hope that the sky remains deep-blue for this intrepid animator!

Image of Japanese Animation

Manga animated films are a huge hit among young Cubans and the characteristic look of its stylized characters, showing triangular heads, flowing straight hair covering part of their faces and large, feline eyes, is imitated by several social groups in the country.

Animated series like Naruto, One Piece, and Hunter X Hunter travel from computer to computer and then onto DVDs in the blink of an eye. To give you a sense of this industry, suffice it to mention that Naruto and One Piece alone have an average of 500 episodes.

Most are fantastic tales involving characters with mental powers or plots that unfold in ancient Japan, where the references to Japanese mythology are constant. For the most part, they are full of action sequences and watched mostly by males. Some of the series most watched in Cuba are Full Metal Alchemist, Devil May Cry and Shingeki no Kyojin.UG & PG Animation Degree

There are also other kinds of series that are very popular among female audiences, the so-called “school series”, where the main characters are young students (almost always in high school) and the most recurrent topic is love.

Comedy series, such as Blood Lad or Kotura-san, tend to be very popular but are quickly forgotten. They are small productions which aren’t sold on DVD, but rather shown on television and uploaded to the Internet. Hence the simplicity of much of their design and its repetitive character types.

Those series with a touch of eroticism and humor (such as B Gata H Kei and KissXsis) are very popular among teenagers of both sexes.

Most of these series are characterized by the superficiality and banality of its characters and plots thn at border on the absurd. Some typical gestures exceed the bounds of caricature and become ridiculous.

Another bothersome aspect of these series is that they tend to stretch out the story like gum and then end it abruptly. This is what happened with Zetsuen no Tempest, which had a promising beginning, but which was ruined because the story was drawn out too much and elements of comedy were added.

Though it may sound contradictory, Mangas aren’t always a waste of time. Zetsuen no Tempest actually motivated me to read Shakespeare, because of its constant references to Hamlet and The Tempest. I read Hamlet in one sitting one night and The Tempest the following day. I became so obsessed with Shakespeare that, in a week’s time, I had already read all of his major tragedies: Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet and others.M.A. in Multimedia Animation
