MSN Travel Guide rates it as the Best University City in the UK.

Based in the North-west of UK and not far from the North Sea is the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Why the strange name? Well, simply because is located on the estuary of river Tyne. Located close to the Arctic circle, it is cold by most Indian standards with temperatures ranging around 1.50 C to 180 C. It has seen better days with trade in wool and coal being the main industries in addition to shipbuilding and repairs. The industries may have all but disappeared but the city and its history remain.

Today it is known as a centre of Education what with the University of Northumbria located here. A former polytechnic, it was established as one of the new universities in 1992 and is a member of the University Alliance.

And yes, it hosts the world’s most popular half marathon, the Great North Run, since it began in 1981!

On the subject of education, the University of Northumbria would be of utmost interest to all those aspiring for a career in animation and special effects. Its annual B.Sc. in Animation, also called “Computer Animation and Visual Effects BSc (Hons)” (UCAS code G450 BSC/CADSFX), is quite famous with its alumni being represented in companies such as HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The University’s website mentions its success in placement as follows

“Our graduates have found positions in companies including Double Negative, Leopard Productions, Lime Studios, FPP, Eutechnyx, Unreal Effects, and many are self-employed and operating as successful freelancers in the industry. Due to the evolving nature of the technology and its creative application, there are an increasing number of specialised application areas that graduates can enter, which are reflected in the Government’s skill shortage list. They include: 2D supervisor; 3D supervisor; software developer; shader writer and stereo artist animator; compositing artist; computer graphics supervisor; matte painter; modeller; producer; production manager; rigger; systems engineer; technical director; texture artist; and visual effects supervisor. In addition, given the wide skill base students acquire during their degree, graduates can also find employment in the broadcast industry, computer games industries, marketing, new media and web design”
